Rightful Steps of Performing Umrah

The word Umrah is derived from the Arabic word I’timaar which means to pay a visit. In Islam, this complimentary prayer means visiting the Holy city of Makkah and circumambulating (tawaf) seven times around the Holy Ka’aba. Umrah can be performed anytime during a year at Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Meeqat is the first place where men and women head to start their Umrah. But before performing any ritual, it is obligatory for both to take a bath if convenient and perform ablution. It is then necessary for men to dress in the clothing of Ihram which is two piece of fabric to cover their body. Other than that no other clothing such as garments, caps, pants etc. are allowed to be worn. While for women no particular clothes are designed for their covering, however, It is mandatory for them to cover themselves properly while keeping face and hands uncovered.

This prayer itself divided into four parts, starts with the entering into a state of Ihram while reciting “Labayka ‘Umrah” or “Allahumma labbayka ‘Umrah”. This statement gives the validation that the journey of pure act rituals has been started.

The journey is continued with Talbiyyah: “labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-mulk, laa shareeka lak”

(“In response to your call O Allah I perform ‘Umrah, here I am O Allah. In response to Your call. You have no partner. In response to Your call. All Praise and Blessings, and the Ownership of all that You created is Yours (alone). You have no partner”).

After arriving at Ka’ba at Makkah, the pilgrim has to face black stone (touch or kiss if possible) and recite “Bismil-laah, Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest) start walking around the Ka’ba. While reaching the Yamani corner of Ka’ba (touch if possible) if not, point and recite “Bismil-laahiwaAllahu Akbar” is mandatory for a pilgrim. This way a pilgrim has to walk around Ka’ba seven times.

During Tawaf (circumambulation) it is recommended to recite Our Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire.” [Quran: 2:201] between two corners just like our Prophet Mohammad PBUH did.

After completing seven circles around Ka’ba, a pilgrim has to reach Maqaam e Ibrahim where he will recite, “And take you (people) the Maqaam (place) of Ibraheem as a place of Prayer…” [Quran: 2:125] and pray two short Rakahs facing the Maqaam e Ibrahim.

The next station to go is the foot of Safaa (mountain) where recite

“Verily, As-Safaa and Al-Marwah are from the symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or ‘Umrah of the house (ka ‘bah) to perform the going (tawaaf) between them. And whoever does well voluntarily, then verily, Allah is the All-Recognizer, All-Knower.” [Quran; 2:158]

While climbing or standing near to Safaa it is necessary to face Ka’ba and recite

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. Laailaahail-lall-llaahuwadahu la shareekalahu, lahulmulkuwalahulhamdu, wahuwa ‘alaaqullishay’inqadeer. Laailaahail-lall-llaahuwahdahu, anjazawa’dahu, wanasara ‘abdahu, wahazamalahzaabawahdahu”.

Then descend and run (men only) towards Marwah (another mountain). There is no specific supplication to recite while walking or running (for men only) between Safaa and Marwah. However, any recitation would be beneficial for a pilgrim. This way seven circuits are completed ending the last one on Marwah.

The last step to be performed before completion of Umrah is to cut hair (shave for men) while for women it is applicable to cut a fingertip length of their hair. It’s all about how to perform Umrah.
