Food filled with Blessings and Benefits of Sunnah
Amongst the thousands of bounties of our Creator, fruits and vegetables are one of them. Fruits provide nourishment as well as refreshing taste. We devour fruits on a daily basis, but a true believer is that who is thankful to Allah for every single bounty bestowed on him, be it a fruit he eats on a daily basis. Just as we turn to Allah, our Creator in difficult times, we should not forget Him during times of enjoyment.
Our Prophet ﷺ, when eating the season’s first fruit would display utmost respect for it by kissing it, touching it with his eyes and reciting a supplication:
So kind and exalted was our Prophet (PBUH) that he would not eat the fruit himself but give it to any young child present at the situation.
Some of the foods filled with blessings as per the ahadith and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) are:
Fresh dates
Dates are a great source of vitamins and minerals. Moreover, it is a good source of energy, fiber as well as sugar. Our Prophet (PBUH) has prescribed us to break our fasts with dates. Hence, we must believe that they must have a great nutritional value for us.
Narrated by Anas Ibn Malik; “Allah’s Apostle used to broke his fast with fresh dates and if there were no dates available, then he had a few dried dates and if there were no dried dates, then he takes water to break his fast.” –Dawud, Book 13: Hadith 2349
Pomegranates
Pomegranates are a rich source of Vitamin C as well as have anti-inflammatory properties. Pomegranates settle the palpitations of the heart. It is reported that in every pomegranate, there is a seed from Jannat. Moreover, it is mentioned in the Quran, Surah Rehman that pomegranates will be amongst the fruits of Jannah.
Cucumbers
Holy Prophet (PBUH) used to relish cucumbers with a pinch of salt. Cucumbers keep the body hydrated, helps improve the skin, and cuts the risk of cancer.
Reported by Abdullah bin Ja’far; I saw Allah’s Messenger ﷺ eating cucumbers with fresh dates. –Muslim, Book 23: Hadith 5072
Honey
Honey is amongst the most favorite foods of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He claimed that eating it allows thousands of remedies to go inside one’s body and millions of diseases to come out. Our Prophet (PBUH) used to drink water and honey on empty stomach every morning.
Ibn ‘Abbas narrated; The Allah’s Apostle Muhammad ﷺ stated,
“Healing is in three articles: cupping, a gulp of honey and cauterization, however, I forbid my followers from cauterization.” –Bukhari, Book 7: Hadith 585
Following the Sunnah of Holy Prophet ﷺ is a blessing in itself. We should eat the foods which he has specified are beneficial for us. We should also thank our Lord whenever eating the fruits and vegetables and supplicate on the first fruit of the season. Such is the far-sightedness of our Prophet ﷺ that the fruit he has prescribed as beneficial to us over 1400 years ago, science just understands their benefits now.
