Earning and Spending money –the Islamic way

Islam is a religion that strikes the root of evil and wants to set up an equitable and fair society. A Muslim should earn his living in Halal ways. He ought to understand the fact that whatever he does, it is known to Allah SWT. He will be responsible for his actions on the Day of Judgment.

As a Muslim, we are endeavoring each day to build up the profound characteristics that are fundamental in this world and hereafter. However, we also require material things in this world, and we require the way to pay for them. Islam being a complete code of life guides us with regards to obtaining and spending wealth.

Earning and Spending

Not acceptable to earn living by illegal means

As Muslims, we realize that wealth and everything else in the Universe originate from Allah SWT. We must gain wealth in a legitimate and Halal way. Islam does not allow earning money by selling or purchasing things that Allah SWT has forbidden us or by taking part in illegal doings. Allah SWT command us:

“O you who have believed, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. Quran 4:29

Sources of income prohibited in Islam

According to Islamic teachings, other than clearly distinguished impermissible sources of earnings, every other source of income is acceptable. The sources of income prohibited in Islam are:
Bribery
Fraud
Stealing and robbery
Gambling
Usurping others’ properties
Income sources of vulgarity
Alcohol and its business
Interest

Do not let wealth distract you

Wealth is a source of pleasure in life but it can also be distraction. An ideal Muslim will deal with wealth as a worldly matter. He is conscious of the fact that this money will not follow him into the hereafter. Muslims need to be on guard against greed. A true believer is not a hoarder of the huge amount of money rather a distributor of those in need of it. Allah the Almighty clearly commands us in the Quran:

“O you who believe! Lo! many of the (Jewish) rabbis and the (Christian) monks devour the wealth of mankind wantonly and debar (men) from the way of Allah. They who hoard up gold and silver and spend it not in the way of god, unto them give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom” (Quran 9:34

Practice Charity

The significance of charity can be realized by the fact that one of the five pillars of Islam is Zakat or giving wealth to needy and poor. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH is an ultimate example of a Muslim who spent his wealth in charity. Even the Companions of Prophet Muhammad PBUH followed His footsteps by providing for others before taking for themselves. Allah SWT says:

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are righteous. (Quran 2:177)

Conclusion

The point to ponder is that only the money earned from Islamic ways will bring us wealth and most importantly the pleasure of Allah the Almighty. Wealth will not go with us to the afterlife but the righteous earning money will stay with us in the form of good deeds. May Allah SWT help us to earn and spend in Islamic ways.
